Sulmona Italy

Sulmona is a city in the province of L’Aquila in Abruzzo. It is surrounded by mountains but is in a plane which was once a lake long before civilization was part of this scenery.

No one who believes in Jesus Christ is under bondage to the law of God; for His law is a law of life, not of death, to those who obey its precepts.

All who comprehend the spirituality of the law, all who realise its power as a detector of sin, are in just as helpless a condition as Satan himself, unless they accept the atonement provided for them in the remedial sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who is our atonement- at-one-ment with God.

Through faith in Christ obedience to every principle of the law is made possible.

Looking down this slope it is hard to envisage Bugzy going through. But we did. We parked for the night diagonally across from this gate of city wall.

It is a city most famous for:

Di Ovido.
There were three of these famous Latin poets: Virgil, Horace and the youngest Di Ovidio.
The film crews were working in Sulmona today. I guess they were saying something about this poet born in this town in 43 BC. and so what did he write? Le Metamorfosi ( a poem portraying the history of the world from creation to the edification of Julius Caesar 15 books!) The loves, The Art of Love and a lost tragedy Medea.
He died in exile in Tomis on the Black Sea. (now Romania) He claims in a poem that he was exiled from Rome by Emporer Augustus in 8AD because
“a poem and a mistake”
were his undoing.
He died in 17 AD.

I have alternated pictures I took of Roman artifacts in the museum with his sayings.

The museum.
An imposing building from the 1500’s.
Look at the long horizontal steps.
A long frontage.
It contained pre-Roman, Roman, and Medieval artifacts .

He who is not prepared today will be less so tomorrow.

Ovido
A selection of Roman pots.

A burden that is done well becomes light.

Ovid

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a beautiful crop.

Ovidio

The workmanship surpassed the subject matter.

Ovidio

Male’s beauty is better for neglect.

Ovidio

To be loved, be loveable.

Habits change into character.

In our play we reveal what kind of people we are.

These three are together. I felt they were all important for me. I couldn’t choose between them. All from Ovidio speaking to us through the mists of time.

Then into the city again where they are still filming.

Built in 1256 this is a medieval aqueduct.
…with a fountain against it.

After a stroll through a long formal park of trees and benches there was the Catterdrale di San Panfilo. Notice the ledge along the front. High school students with their two PE teachers were using it to do stretches. They had been exercising in the park. Good to see.

The facade has Romanesque baselines and a 1391 Gothic portal/ entrance .

Italy is still giving so much of its rich culture and natural surroundings from the past to the present that we are lucky to still be here. Thank you that we can share them with you.

Sandy 🙂

    1. Thank you! I am so charmed by the variety of history in such relaxed surroundings. For instance Bess came with us into the museum. We were the only people in the building with wonderful artifacts. Thank you for commenting.
