The Republic of San Marino

Grow in grace says Peter and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen

2Peter 3 : 18

San Marino is a microstate and amongst the world’s oldest republics. It is surrounded by North Central Italy. In the 1800s , the country took in many people persecuted for supporting the unification of Italy, and in 1862 a friendship treaty guaranteed its continuing independence from the Italian state. The Republic is 61km square.

Here is the Basilica of Saint Marinus. Marinus was born in 275 in Rab Croatia. He was a Christian stonemason seeking refuge from religious persecution. He had refused to make sacrifices to the Roman gods.
Come inside this church built in 1836 . You will see his statue directly in front at the altar.

No matter how narrow and confined the streets or how little free land there is. I have noticed there is always place for a few pot plants or even a garden. Let me share these with you.

The movement up and down the steep streets carved into Mount Titano (739m high) makes many sit and rest before continuing with their shopping in well stocked shops.

A watch tower from 1253 then a bell tower added in 1530 then a fortress/prison from 1550. A useful place for the town. It was good to notice a pleasant garden and chapel with someone walking out.

A hill top Republic. A busy place. Glad you could see it with us. Here are a couple of sayings:

It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is from the top.

Arnold Bennett (1867- 1931 English writer)

No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.

Frank Lloyd Wright ( 1867-1959 American architect, designer, writer, educator.)

Take care and thank you for looking at this post.

Sandy 🙂

  1. The Basilica of Saint Marinus is simply stunning! It looks so overwhelmingly beautiful. I’m also fascinated by bell towers and that one looks so interesting.
