Bologna Italy

God was talking to Samuel about the new King. He said “don’t look at his height or his appearance I have decided I don’t want him , I (God), look at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16 : 7
This is the most iconic symbol of the city of Bologna.
The fountain of Neptune 1563 -1566.
The construction was commissioned by Cardinal Legate Charles Borromed, to symbolise the fortunate election of his uncle as Pope Pius IV.
The lordly gesture of Neptune is interpreted as the exaltation of the new power of the
Pope Pius IV .
Just as Neptune was the master of the seas, the Pope was the master of Bologna and the world. (Wikepeadia)

There are several copies of Neptunes fountain around the world: Laken (Brussels) , Palos Verdes Estate in Calafornia, Batumi Georgia and Hirashima Japan.

Here is what Sophia Loren (1934 – Italian actress) said about a fountain:

” There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source. You will truly have defeated age.”

Looking through the electric tram wires two towers go up into the blue of a bright sky.
Two families in competition for power the towers known by each family’ s name.. .
Asinelli 92.2 m and Garisenda 48m. These families constructed them between 1109 and 1119.

Charles Dickens wrote about them in his ” Pictures from Italy ” while others have made use of them for experiments : Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1640) used them to study the motion of heavy bodies. Giovanni Battista Guglielmin a hundred years later used them to study the earth’s rotation. From 1943 -1945 they were sight posts to direct rescue operations. It is also thought that Minoru Yamasaki was inspired by them when designing the World Trade centre.

an unfished building from 1479.
The Basilica de San Pretonio.
It dominates the Piazza Maggiore with the Fountain of Neptune close by.
A strong architectural couple.
Then the gentle toans of Italians chatting while drinking coffee under the arched colonades found on many streets
but here opposite the church.
The streets have colour so for a little window shopping…
I leave you with these two young men summing up the time spent in Bologna.

Thank you for lingering a while with me on a warm autumn day.

  1. Love the contrast of the amazing, complicated architecture and the simplicity of the vegetable market. Enjoyed your post.

  2. Another great selection of images. You really captured a cool angle of the two towers—it gave me a good idea of how massive they are. I also really loved the arched colonades. Such a beautiful place to enjoy a cup of coffee.

    1. Glad you liked the towers they are portrayed in so many pictures and I saw them differently so glad it showed their size. It is a great place to sit and let time pass. Thank you for your encouraging comments so appreciated.

  3. Thank you Sandy! I am loving this idea of touring with you through beautiful Italy! Have a fantastic time and enjoy the sun ripened veggies!
