The fountain of Neptune 1563 -1566.
The construction was commissioned by Cardinal Legate Charles Borromed, to symbolise the fortunate election of his uncle as Pope Pius IV.
The lordly gesture of Neptune is interpreted as the exaltation of the new power of the
Pope Pius IV .
Just as Neptune was the master of the seas, the Pope was the master of Bologna and the world. (Wikepeadia)
There are several copies of Neptunes fountain around the world: Laken (Brussels) , Palos Verdes Estate in Calafornia, Batumi Georgia and Hirashima Japan.
Here is what Sophia Loren (1934 – Italian actress) said about a fountain:
” There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source. You will truly have defeated age.”
Two families in competition for power the towers known by each family’ s name.. .
Asinelli 92.2 m and Garisenda 48m. These families constructed them between 1109 and 1119.
Charles Dickens wrote about them in his ” Pictures from Italy ” while others have made use of them for experiments : Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1640) used them to study the motion of heavy bodies. Giovanni Battista Guglielmin a hundred years later used them to study the earth’s rotation. From 1943 -1945 they were sight posts to direct rescue operations. It is also thought that Minoru Yamasaki was inspired by them when designing the World Trade centre.
