Time spent in Strasbourg

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Matthew 1 : 21
In 1874 this Gothic Cathedral was the tallest building in the world!
From the tourists and our shops these ancient buildings guide the eye to a round Rose window.
A Steinbach thought put into glass.
His minds eye saw ears of wheat symbolising the commercial power of Strasbourg.
Steinbach was born in 1244 and died in 1318. He was a German architect and central figure in the construction of the Strasbourg Cathedral.
From the deep darkness of the interior of this sandstone medieval Notre-Dame cathedral, the kaleidoscope of light pouring through these windows is Divine.
…the third clock in this position. It dates from 1843.
It has a perpetual calendar, a planetary dial and
a display of the real position of the sun and the moon as well as the solar and lunar eclipses.
At solar noon each day it has a procession of 18 inch figures of Christ and the Apostles of which I only saw the last figure disappearing into the clock. I didn’t hear or see the life size cock crow three times.
Back on the street here is a monument to Gutenberg and a Carousel.
An unusual pair.
One in the shade and the other in the sun!

A quote from Gutenberg: ” It is a press, certainly, but a press from which shall flow in inexhaustible streams. Through it, God will spread His Word. A spring of truth shall flow from it: like a new star it shall scatter the darkness of ignorance, and cause a light theretofore unknown to shine amongst men . “

( I imagine this is a translation as it doesn’t flow but the message is clear. )

Johannes Gutenberg (1468) He was a German inventor , printer , publisher , and goldsmith who introduced printing to Europe with his mechanical movable – type writing press.

Here are a few of the streets as I saw them and a church where Mozzart played the organ in 1778.

Eglise Saint -Thomas.
The light was so intense within the church , I couldn’t get a picture of the Rose window but there was the organ…

There was so much to see but I chose a little to enjoy . Thank you for letting me share this with you.

Sandy 🙂
