It is difficult to ignore nature’s mat- forming plants with their star shaped flowers in pink, white and yellow. Here they are together in a container with pebbles at their base just as they are growing over gravel in the garden. In the centre are a few leaves of a succulent, panda plant. (Kalanchoe tomentosa Baker)

Caucasian Stonecrop

Will the roof of new buildings be vegetated? If not, why not?

Sedums have some natural characteristics that make it suitable for a green roof. They have shallow roots so only need a shallow substrate, they store water in their leaves so tolerate drought and are hardy. A green roof of Sedum could be a great choice.
