Beloved , think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you: But rejoice , as you are sharing of Christ’s sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, you may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1Peter 4: 12 and 13 ( This is the same Peter who was crucified upside down. He is depicted in painting in ToledoCathedral later in this post)
The belfry contains a heavy bell called “the fat one”.Getting nearer… Toledo Cathedral was built on the site of a 7th century church. In 1226 work started and it spanned three centuries, until the last vaults were completed in 1493. This is the reason for its mixture of styles. French Gothic and Spanish decorative.
EL Greco and Goya
Enter through this door into the Sacristy, to be faced by the Martirio de San Andre’s 1616 BY Vicente Carducho 1576-1638 Then enter a large room with …The Disrobing of Christ by EL Greco ( a nickname). This was started in 1577 and completed in 1579 for the Cathedral of Toledo where it still hangs. He was only given 350 ducats instead of 950 ducats. He was also supposed to have removed some of the figures objected to, which he didn’t. (The three ladies in the left corner are still in the painting). Notice the man in green ready to rip off the robe and the man with the nail making the wood ready to receive it. I think it strange that he chose a red robe instead of white. Then to the right of this painting hangs a Goya painting…
I suffer for my art and despise the witless moneyed scoundrels who praise it.
You must study the Masters but guard the original style that beats within your soul and put to sword those who would try to steal it.
El Greco (He was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaussance. This is his nickname. He liked his very long Greek name with Greek letters )
The Arrest of Christ by Goya 1798. This is one of his most representative of his work as a whole. The focal point is in the lower part of the canvas lit by a lamp held by someone behind Judas. Jesus robe attracts the eye, contrasting with the soldier’s clothing and their “crown” of grimaces. Then exit past…
Always lines, never forms! But where do they find lines in nature? For my part I see only forms that are lit up and forms that are not. There is only light and shadow.
Francisco Goya
Martirio de San Pedro 166l BY Eugenio Cajes 1575 – 1634
There are then many other art works of distinction which I hope I have given you a reminder of / the encouragement to look on line or visit one day.
A pleasant Chapel. The Cathedral is dedicated to the ascension of Mary with many statues of Mary. Here is a particularly charming baby Jesus holding Mary’s chin. Some other particularly interesting art work. Then back into the streets of Toledo on a very hot afternoon with a cycle ride back to Bugzy and Bess. Bess loves Bugzy and the windows are all left open. Some of what caught my eye in the streets of Toledo.
