Antonio Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia as I saw it today

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1
Antonio Gaudi was involved in a tram accident in 1926 and his dream lives on in others who continue the work.  What an amazing legacy.
Looking at the star on the tower and the plant on the balcony I saw nature and creative work together in the sky.

“Nothing is invented, for it is written in nature first”

Antoni Gaudi
Mary on the donkey with the baby Jesus holding up his right hand as though responding to Joseph.

“Originality consists in returning to the origin.  Thus, originality means returning , through one’s resources, to the simplicity of the early solutions.”

Antoni Gaudi
On the floor as you exit the new part. A donkey with the adult Jesus riding into Jerusalem . People treating Him as a king and taking off their cloaks as well as waving branches. (This caused so much jealousy that it lead to him being crucified.)

Those who look for the laws of nature as a support for their new works collaborate with the creator.

Antoni Gaudi
Detail of the cock crowing three times as Peter denies that he knows Jesus.
Then here Jesus is vulnerably, naked, crucified by, and for His world of people.
Looking through the trunk like supports of the church at the balconies of  flats where people call home. A view for both. Church and home.
The planting around the Sagrada Familia  is a mix of greys and greens,  with yellow flowering Spanish sage and purple lavender. A contrast to the pink of the structure.

‘When I went to take the measurements, the ground was totally covered with the little yellow flowers that I used  as the ornamental theme in the ceramics.  I also found a lush palm, and palmattes, fused in metal, cover the grid of the gate and the door to the house.”

Antoni Gaudi ( I wish I had taken pictures of these for you. I saw them but didn’t know how I would put this together like I have. Gaudi has said so much about his work.)
Tree trunk type support pillars with the crucified Jesus lit up, his knees bent up higher than usual.

“Nothing is Art if it doesn’t come from nature.”

Red and yellow to the right…

“Colour in certain places has the great value of making the outlines and structural planes seem more energetic.”

Antoni Gaudi
…greens and blues to the left… an expanse of space , light, colour and enormity.

Today they were still working on this amazing place. One man’s love of nature and willingness to work with small models and dream about ‘the different’, lead to a staggering amount of human endeavour.  I hope you enjoyed this moment I have shared and that you will either have the opportunity to see it yourself or find out some more interesting facts . There are so many.  Here is a last quote from Antini Gaudi :

The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read,  is that of nature .”
