This is my Father’s world and to my listening ear all nature sings and round me rings the beauty of’ His world.’
From a song we sang often in assembly in our school of 1,000 girls, Townsend High school.
The plant in the foreground is Carpobrotus. The name comes from the Greek ‘Karpos’ fruit and ‘brotos ‘ edible. I was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and even when living in Rhodesia we would return there to camp on the sands near the sea. Mum used to pucker up her mouth eating this unusual fruit. She called it a ‘goon’ (her word). This succulent plant has several names……pig face, ice plant, sour fig, Hottentot fig and clawberry …Carpobrotus creeps along the ground and is in strong contrast with its fleshy green leaves on the gritty yellow of the sand.Treasure – flower (Gazaniarigens). A native to coastal regions in South Africa and is naturalised here in Spain. It has jewel bright flowers and is an evergreen that spreads with trailing stems. It can also be grown as an annual.Advice from a palm tree… soak up the sun, stand tall and proud, remember your roots, drink plenty of water, be content with your beauty, and enjoy the view. What a gorgeously post! All of it. I remember Mom eating those goonas just like that. She’s never let us have any because she said dogs could have peed on them. I could never understand why she should eat them then😁
Mum pulled such a face but continued to eat them we didn’t dog wee explanation was enough to put us off for life.😊I will see if there are some and try them here.
