Notice the rich green heart-shaped leaves and then the cluster of flowers from pink to lilac. Lilacs thrive in fertile, humus-rich , well-drained neutral to alkaline soil.
The smell of moist earth and lilacs hung in the air like wisps of the past and hints of the future.

My mum was a child during the second World War and she loved to sing just any song from that time. She didn’t have a good voice and her two sisters who did told her so! Her daughters, Shelly and I loved her loud slightly off key voice. One of her favourites was “You are my sunshine you make me happy when skies are grey.” She would put our names into the song and we adored her for it. The funny thing was our country very rarely had grey skies. Then she would pretend she was Vera Lyn and sing ” We’ll Gather Lilacs in the spring…” We didn’t have any lilacs in our garden then but when she came to England she was thrilled to see them.
