Today we enjoyed lunch in the pleasant town of Hoedspruit but most of the day was spent doing homely things. Looking at the plants and trees in the garden, and photographs from our childhood with Shelly making some jam this morning. I woke up too late.😁
The sign welcoming us to Hoedspruit.A nest for a scrub Robin.The nobbly bark of the know thorn.The peachy colour of Christ thorn.The delicate pink of a Swazi lily.Some Impala lilies outlined with a wide margin of cerrise and a gigantic ancient……lead wood tree. In the past this was where they slaughtered animals and hung them up to bleed. There is a cement block on the ground and a metal chain with a wire ring still hanging from a stout branch. Khakibos and Lantana. These two plants aren’t growing on the property but were picked on the roadside. Both can become invasive. I will dispose of them carefully.
Khakibos has its name connected to the khaki uniforms worn by the British soldiers during the Anglo Boer war (1899 -1902). The plant was introduced with the imported fodder for the British Army’s horses. Khakibos can be put into compost and stops insect infestation. It is also good to plant next to tomatoes and pumpkins for the same reason.
As a child I used to love making posies with lantana. Each flower a small doll’s posy.
It was a joy to look through old pictures with my sister and this is what she found for me.

I wrote about my patch in a post under memoriesLion ant holes that I used to tickle with a fine stick as a child. I mentioned these in my post : Memories of my first school. These little holes were under where the zebra were standing in the carport.Lizard on Cacti. Shelly helped me spot it and center the photograph.
Then preparing fruit to make jam…
Washing marula fruit picked up off the ground from a tree growing on the side of the road. Washed then pierced and left to soak over night. Elephants go crazy for this fruit and it is a favourite of rhinoceroses, giraffes and monkeys.Here is the honey coloured jam made by Shelly early this morning. Marula fruit has a rich velvety, nutty- caramel flavour with a hint of citrus. It is rich in minerals and vitamins.

Ah now that is what I should put below aloe vera. Was too focused on the gecko/ Lizard. God is good.
